You can set up challenges that ask readers to track different types of reading, or log types. When logging on the web, readers only see the log type(s) for the challenge(s) in which they're enrolled; so, for instance, a young reader enrolled in 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten will only see the option to log books, while a middle grade student enrolled in 500 Books Before Middle School and Summer Reading: Minutes will see the options to log books and minutes. On the mobile app, readers can log any or all log types in a reading session.
Our 2021 summer reading report found that minutes are the most engaging log type for all but the very youngest pre-readers, since it allows readers to get in the habit of logging their reading every day or multiple times a day. Young readers ages 0-5, on the other hand, had the most engagement in books-logging challenges. We recommend using minutes logging badges in challenges for kids, teens, and adults, and books logging badges in challenges for babies and toddlers in pre-K.
